English Learner Professional Development

The Big Picture (RDG-5A)

Description
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) results from 2017, only 35 percent of the nation’s fourth and eighth graders are reading at or above grade level (NAEP, 2017). That means about two-thirds of the students you will be teaching may be struggling readers! In this lesson, you will examine the complexity of struggling readers in the context of the grade or subject you are teaching and learn about the characteristics and needs of English Language Learners (ELL).

The following books are required for all courses in this certificate:

1. Making Content Comprehensible for English Language Learners: The Siop Model by Jana Echevarria, MaryEllen Vogt, & Deborah Short
